Tackling Climate Change

  • How trees absorb pollution from the air and water, and how this pollution contributes to climate change.
  • How trees reduce energy use in buildings, which in turn reduces the creation of pollution.
  • How trees absorb particulates and viruses from the air.
  • How trees reduce stormwater flow, and the pollution-loading in this water through its filtration system.
  • How the urban tree canopy is so important in reducing pollution levels and smog.

Environment and Ecosystems

  • A wide variety of trees make up our ecosystems, and this variety, or biodiversity, must be planted in order to protect and maintain all of the species dependent on this mix of trees.
  • Trees provide  homes, food, and shelter  to a vast variety of  birds, animals and insects that comprise our ecosystems. All species are inter-dependent, and as their homes, food and shelter diminish, so will they.  What would we do without our pollinators?
  • Trees also play a large role in maintaining soil quality and reducing errosion.
  • This Program is a learning enhancement to the Science, Geography and Life Sciences Curriculum through all grade levels.

Actions

  • Learning how to plan a yard for tree plantings, and learning safety in planting.
  • Physically planting trees:  skills that will last a lifetime.
  • Outdoor education and physical activity.
  • Learning how to be the environmental guardians.

Results

  • Trees on schoolyards and community parks to reduce pollution, tackle climate change, reduce water pollution, maintain the ecosystem, and provide shade.
  • Fosters environmental stewardship.
  • Creating the sense of achievement and environmental leadership in the students.
