Butterflies are our prime pollinator next to the bee. This makes the butterfly tremendously important to mankind. With expanding cities and suburbs, the majority of southern Ontario's natural meadows, which are home to the butterfly, have been removed through urban development. This not only impacts the butterfly, but also the vast "meadow ecosystem biodiversity" which is tremendously important, particularly in the case of climate change.
BUTTERFLY GARDEN PROGRAM: Grades K through 8
This Program is directed at the curriculum and directly involves the school children in learning about the butterfly, ecosystems, species interdependence, the impacts of pollution, and how we can reduce pollution in our everyday lives. Earth Angels provides the in-class Educational Modules, as well as the plants and materials for the children to plant a butterfly garden on a protected area of their schoolyard. The garden planting segment of this Program takes place during the school-day in mid to late May.
MEADOW ECOSYSTEM HABITAT: "Biodiversity Protection and Analysis" Grades 9 through 12
70% of southern Ontario's meadow habitat has been removed through urbanization and agriculture. The native plants forming these meadows are the homes, and source of food and health, for our pollinators. These meadows are also considered the "Green Pharmacy" for humans. This program is directed at creating meadow habitat throughout our urban areas to protect our biodiversity and pollinators, particularly in light of climate change. This project takes place on the school property, and Earth Angels provides the in-class educational modules, the native meadow plants, planting instructions, and the analysis sheets to allow the students to gather data on their meadow habitat development. The planting segment of this Program takes place during the school-day in mid-to-late May.
Schools applying for these Program will need to provide a photo of the proposed area for their Butterfly Garden.
