Tackling Pollution and Climate Change
- This Program is designed to both: (1) initiate the young school children into working in the soil, planting plants and protecting the environment through action; and (2) provide a vehicle for all students to play a role in protecting our ecosystems and environmental stewardship.
- Learning how all species are inter-dependent, and how the loss of a species through pollution and climate change has a wide-spread impact. What happens if we lose our pollinators?
- Learning how plants absorb pollution, particulates, and viruses from the air.
- This mini-ecosystem filters pollutants from the air and water.
Environment and Ecosystems
- The children get their introduction to ecosystems and the inter-connectedness of all species through the study of the butterfly.
- The children get to create this mini-ecosystem by planting the differing plants and trees that the butterfly will need through each stage of its lifecycle, from caterpillar to pupae to butterfly.
- Learning about the fragility of the environment and how to protect it.
- Curriculum links for the younger grades are the introduction of a new plant and animal into their knowledge base.
- Making a direct and positive impact on the environment
Actions
- Starting the children on the road to environmental stewardship by having them actively involved in creating a mini-ecosystem that will support the butterfly, other species, and possibly endangered species.
- Learning about, and creating a mini-ecosystem. Hands-on learning.
- Outdoor education and physical activity.
